In co-operation with France’s National Research Centre (CNRS) Arkamys has performed a preliminary study aimed at testing the ability of various headphone types to effectively generate 3D audio. The findings suggest that headphones in the lower price range like say iPod insert earphones will work just fine, as well as of course the more expensive models.

The results of this study will be presented at the Acoustics 08 conference being held in Paris next week. Here is a copy of the submitted paper for those that are more scientifically inclined and would like to see the results.

We were also able in this study to confirm the importance of having a personalized 3D audio (see previous post on press release in Le Figaro) effect. The findings add impetus to the ‘listen with your own ears’ project as we head towards the release of a technology that will create 3D sound, based on the shape of your own ears and head.
